Battleaxe takes a breath… and calms…

Yeees… weelll… I think Battleaxe is getting a little calmer. But first, look at this exciting QR code. It links to the revamped ‘Writing’ page on this Hastings Battleaxe site. Most writers have a website where they advertise themselves and their work, but I only have this. Is it enough? I hope so. Readers, have a look at the page and let me know if you think it needs amending. Before I do my next literary event I’ll order up give-away bookmarks with the code incorporated. Neat, huh? Anyway, this weekend we had a nice time with our old friends Sue and Alex, who came down from Birmingham. Battleaxe feels a bit better – have been sleeping more hours, touch wood.

How did I make the QR Code? Well, at the Crime Writers’ Day last weekend (see last post), my colleagues told me that you can get one for free. I used Adobe Express. Dead simple. You  just give it the address of the site you want to link to and it appears… You can even get it in different colours. I chose green. Don’t ask me how a QR code works. I have no idea.  For anyone who might be reading this who might not even know what you do with such a code, you point the camera of your smartphone at it, and a banner will show up on the screen. Click on that, and it goes to the website. You can try it now! Those codes appear all over the place now, eg on bus stops, to tell you what the time of the next bus is – supposedly…

Back to the weekend. On Saturday we went for a walk through the Country Park and then walked down to Fairlight Village. Fortunately, the weather was cloudy and quite breezy rather than boiling hot. Started off with a coffee in the Bale House, then did a circular walk to take in the sea views before heading downhill. Here’s Philosopher with Sue and Alex. Have not included Battleaxe – another terrible picture.

Had lunch in the Cove pub. Battleaxe and Philosopher have been before and rated it. Oh look, it was featured in the Guardian a while ago…  It was fine this time too – a bit youthy, maybe, but fine.I’ve never noticed the pub sign before – it has an allusion to the Fairlight nudist beach… it is painted in rather muted colours so not easy to see.

Then we caught the bus back up to the top of the hill. Our friends wanted to look at Fairlight Church. Unfortunately the church was locked but the graveyard is very interesting.

Several notable people are buried there, including the family of Cecil Rhodes, and Rupert D’Oyly Carte, but we didn’t come across any of those. We did find this one very poignant war grave, of a ‘Boy 2nd class’. Here is the relevant extract from the history of the church on its website.

This is a short post – but am still rationing my computer time.

Good to see you’re getting out! Well done with the QR code!
