Blogoversary, New Year, new decade….

Hastings Battleaxe will be nine years old this December 31. I don’t know if that sounds sad, or, on the other hand, impressive… I hope the latter. I don’t think many blogs last as long as this.  So, congratulations, Battleaxe. What’s more, it will soon be 2020. Not actually the start of a new decade, more like the end of the previous one, but everyone seems to leap into all-changing frenzy once the decade number rolls over. So, happy Blogoversary, New Year and new decade….

There I was back in December 2011, at the start of our new life in Hastings, writing my first post in the little upstairs room in our temporary home in Harold Road.  Here’s the link to the post.   Then, I was very concerned about Christmas lights, and in particular the total darkness up in this road where we were eventually to settle. Well, nine years on that Christmas view is totally transformed. I wouldn’t presume to say that it is anything to do with our influence but our little road is now a glittering mass of lights. In fact, this year, our display has been upstaged by one of our neighbours. Action will have to be taken….

View from our house…. let there be lights!

We’ve had a cheerful Christmas. We went up to Brum last weekend and met with family and friends. Our old friend Shaun came down for Christmas itself. We ate a great deal, did our usual Christams jigsaw, went out to drinks with friends and went to the panto – Aladdin at the White Rock. It was Shaun’s fault – he thought a friend of his was directing it, but after I had bought the tickets he told us that the friend was directing not Hastings but Hayes…. and will likely do Hastings next year. The production was good fun but a bit shouty. Incredibly camp – the genie was the campest thing evah dahlings.

How camp is that genie?

2019 has been quite a year.  Climate crisis, Trump and never mind the British political upheavals, about which one can only now grit teeth, sigh and turn away…

Hastings Battleaxe was reborn in January, as a WordPress blog, after seven years on Google Blogger. I think it looks more professional, but is not as easy to manage. Here is the post about it.

I reached 70 in August.  I am not yet sure what sort of old lady I want to be… will it be this?

Or…. Oh goodness, just googled up ‘Stylish older woman’ and came across this:  it is apparently a book by someone called Beatrix Ost. If I looked like her I guess Philosopher would be a little surprised… and I’d never be that thin. Dammit, look at her, and she is 77….

Who knows…. Anyway, I’m not old yet. Well, as long as I don’t turn into this…. what a nightmare….

Nooooo…..

In 2020 I published my first poetry book, ‘Lines and Wrinkles’.  I still have a few copies if anyone wants one! Here is the post about it!

I stood down as President of the WI – still not sure how that will feel when I go to my first meeting in January… Here is the post about that…

What about New Year’s Resolutions? Well, first, we want to declutter the house a bit. Starting in the attic and moving downwards…

Oh, enough.

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL!

Just read your original blog Steph. Still think it was an incredibly brave thing to do decamping to Hastings. But we are glad you did!

Happy New Year to you too, Stephanie, plus happy new decade and happy seventies as well. I like the hedonistic look of your cigar smoking woman. Although I don’t smoke, I think she’s closer to me than either of the other two 🙂

Nine years is good for a blog these days! Congratulations!
